VIRUS SPREADS NORTH
Hopes that the Phocine Distemper Virus (PDV) epidemic was on the decline have suffered a setback after post-mortems on two grey seals found dead on Shetland in early December have proved positive for the disease.
This is doubly worrying, as it is the first time the disease has been confirmed so far north. During the 1988 epidemic it never got further north than Orkney.
It is thought that over 3,000 seals have been killed in the U.K. since the first confirmed case in late summer.
It would be a shame to end the year on a negative note so here is some good news!
Following our expose on this website and in the UK press the Scottish SSPCA are no longer destroying abandoned seals but are rehabilitating them at their centre in Fife.
Our thanks to Harriet and Abigail of Yorkshire, England who raised £26 for Save Our Seals Fund from a mini jumble sale. Thanks also to Khalif of the USA who becomes our first Internet supporter with a $20 donation.
We are still way short of the funds needed to replace the Seal Rescue Boat on Islay so please keep the financial support coming in.
